1188 jobs cut at Department of Human Services

Breaking news from the Federal Budget 2017. The Turnbull Government are not only cutting 1188 jobs from the Department of Human Services – they are also piloting outsourcing in social security.

The Turnbull Government has learned nothing from its failure to privatise Medicare last year and are now proposing to test outsourcing call centre functions in the Department of Human Services (DHS) which includes Centrelink.

Not only that, but after robodebt and after 36 million unanswered calls to Centrelink last year, they are cutting more than 1000 more jobs from DHS.

Whether we’re looking for work, just had a baby or caring for a relative with a disability, we all have the right to a fair and accessible social security system. We have the right to know there’s a person at the end of the phone when we call.

We need more permanent, well-trained staff in the Department of Human Services – not more cuts.

The community came together to defeat Medicare privatisation and the community must come together again to fight outsourcing at the Department of Human Services.
