Don’t Centralise Our Weather Forecasting

Scott Morrison’s government and the Director of the Bureau of Meteorology have plans to centralise forecasting. This will mean moving forecasting from across Australia to just Melbourne and Brisbane. This is against the advice of the forecasting experts within the BoM. Australia needs localised forecasting for safer communities.

Sign the petition to let Environment Minister Melissa Price and BoM Director Dr Andrew Johnson know that you think centralising BoM forecasters would be a disaster.

    Absolutely NO to centralise forecasting!! Regions are very different and depend on the BoM for specific information about rainfalls, storms, heatwaves. Businesses and recreational interests all need local information. For farming, boating, surfing, harvesting, fishing, sailing, travelling….

    Weather conditions change from suburb to suburb and even within suburbs so how can another state forecast what is happening locally in NSW

    I very strongly disagree with centralised forecasting.


    It is unlikely that knowledge and understanding of local weather conditions, or conditions that could be specific to a particular area, historic anecdotal evidence and the like, would be known by forecasters who could be hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away.


    This local knowledge/information could be vital in assisting the emergency services to secure the safety of peoples lives and/or property in emergency situations.


    I am extremely concerned that people could lose their lives as a result, if forecasting being centralised in Melbourne and Brisbane.

    localised forecasting is imperative to rural Oz. Primary producers are having a bad enough time with the drought – this will make it even more difficult and time consuming for them.

    Stop hacking into essential government services. Stop the endless cost-cutting – the price is too high.

    Don’t centralise weather forecasting, because we need forecasters from the local area, to give us accurate forecasts for our safety.
