For months we’ve been asking Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to step in and stop the cuts to climate science at the CSIRO – now secret tapes have revealed that the Government's attitiude towards climate science is behind the cuts.

'It's a fundamental shift away from curiosity-led research toward impact... The federal government was CSIRO's most important 'customer', and it no longer wanted what the climate scientists were selling.

'I don't mean to be insensitive,' said Dr Marshall, 'but you have to get real about your customer.'"

    The argument that we have to cut back on science while continuing subsidies to the fossil fuel lobby and others is transparently false and misleading. If you are serious about innovation and the future (never mind a sustainable future even) you would encourage more science and research, not less.

    Major downsizing of CSIRO’s contribution to science for the public good, as now proposed, can only be seen as ignoring the need to anticipate future changes more accurately. For example, the group in Hobart has recently shown that sea level rise is accelerating more than expected in the IPCC report published just two years earlier. Australia has at least $200 billion worth of coastal assets at risk. Does the government want to be able to anticipate the risks that these face more accurately, or just learn after coastal disasters have started to occur.

    I have a child who attends university..completing a science degree. So are a concerned parent for job opportunities here in Australia, I am asking for the Government to step up to the plate and assist CSIRO for its future.

    Prime Minister Turnbull do not cut funds to CSIRO. Without them we do not have the expertise to assess climate science. We need to lead the world not follow. Our country is unique and need to keep it that way!

    The CSIRO is fundamental to the role Australian science plays on the world stage and the continuing role it plays it plays in the monitoring and interpreting the changes of Climate Change. I therefore urge you to meet with the climate scientists who are asking to meet with you and hear what they have to say.
