Dear David Thoday

Just listening to the News. You still haven’t sacked your errant CEO? Or alternatively, you haven’t also sacked the Board and resigned? You are heading a major scientific organisation that will slash Australia’s excellent climate change research capabilities. As temp records are broken continually and the Reef is bleaching. Have you thought of your apology to your grandchildren? You will owe one to all grandchildren including my own. How will the CSIRO Board and Marshall be remembered? If there’s a civilisation to remember in a few hundred years. Civilisation has only existed for 10,000 years, in a benign climate that we are rapidly departing from. Your actions will endanger the response to changes that are frighteningly and unexpectedly apparent. I have written the same to Minister Hunt. Do you want this responsibility for your part in the end of civilisation?

Be it on your head and those of Marshall and the Board. Not just incompetent at managing internal change, but much too competent in assisting climate change.

I implore you to renege on these changes

To invest in the future we need CSIRO scientists.

CSIRO research benefits Australia way more than the money these cuts are saving.

How can we promote science in schools and at the same time, reduce career opportunities?

CSIRO is being turned into purely a revenue driven research organisation. Pure research for Australias good and world knowledge doesn’t bring in dollars and is being cut or scrapped.

It is most important that the present cuts to jobs at and funding of the CSIRO cease. Without the invaluable work of the CSIRO on climate science Australia cannot retain its preeminent research position in this field. In fact, Australia will become a second class contributor in this arena and be left behind, somewhere in the middle of the last century. This is hardly what we expect of a Government which purports to support research, innovation and new fields of endeavour. But it does accord with any government living in the past or in denial of climate science findings. Come on Malcolm, get real about properly funding new century research. And stop applying an out dated business model to a world class instituion. Defunding the CSIRO will wreck its work. Is that really what you want? It won’t be picked up by anyone else and it’s disingenuous to think it will be.


Moreover, the pretend retreat from Larry Marshall’s original position is just that – pretense.

Climate scientists from CSIRO made significant contribution to our understanding of Earth climate system and should be supported for their excellent work.

It has always been difficult to keep the best research scientists in Australia with better facilities & pay, in the US & Canada, in particular. Once they leave they rarely return. We can’t afford this brain drain, Mr Turnbull.

We have some of the best and most innovative scientists in the world. Australia is continually among the first to make new discoveries. I grew up with CSIRO they are the backbone of research in this country. We need there expertise in all areas of the environment and climate now, and I mean NOW! Now more than ever before.

CSIRO is known for their excellent climate research including the transfer of the results to end-users. This very successful work with internationally appreciated scientists shall continue. Furthermore, Australia is one of the countries most impacted by climate change and the government needs to know how to adapt to climate change in a sustainable way to ensure a long-term future for this dry continent. The climate experts at CSIRO are the best people to create the needed knowledge base.

Please consider the future of science & research in this country. We have list too many brilliant people overseas. Sadly, l don’t think this is something we need to remind you Mr Turnbull, but you are disappointing us in so many ways, the CSIRO being just one of them.

It is important that the Turnbull government take privatising the CSIRO off the table. Radical idea No 72 on IPA list is to privatise CSIRO. This is unacceptable.

Dear Malcolm, I realise that the Liberal Party has (admittedly rather selective) views on the value of small government. Still, of all the public institutions to downsize, in my opinion CSIRO is without doubt in the top 5 that should not be messed with at such a critical time in our social and political life. Please recognise its value is multifaceted and longlasting, and we will all suffer – business as much as anyone else – if CSIRO’s work is undermined as it undoubtedly has already been by your government. Please stop it you weird opportunistic man
