For months we’ve been asking Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to step in and stop the cuts to climate science at the CSIRO – now secret tapes have revealed that the Government's attitiude towards climate science is behind the cuts.

'It's a fundamental shift away from curiosity-led research toward impact... The federal government was CSIRO's most important 'customer', and it no longer wanted what the climate scientists were selling.

'I don't mean to be insensitive,' said Dr Marshall, 'but you have to get real about your customer.'"

    The CSIRO is the most effective scientific organisation in this country. Let’s look at taxing the corporations milking this country dry and putting more money INTO CSIRO, not keep cutting it to the core.

    We need the research, information and advice of climate scientists, now, more than ever. Any cutbacks to public science are cutbacks to the safety of all Australians. You are risking health, food security and biodiversity with cuts to CSIRO. You are also causing a loss of intelligent insight and analysis. The businesses you support will be just as vulnerable to climate change as ordinary citizens. Loss of scientific analysis is a loss for us all.

    As a climate scientist, I urge Prime Minister Turnbull to see reason and stop the cuts to the CSIRO, a world-class institution or world-class scientists.

    CSIRO scientists have been strong international contributors to climate research and are critical for a southern hemisphere perspective. High-quality scientists like them should be valued and nurtured, and will prove to be nigh-on irreplaceable.

    I am a University student studying software development and recently reached out to a department of CSIRO to access an API and data that they have generated. An employee from the CSIRO got back to me within minutes on a weekend (probably outside their work hours) and they were very helpful.

    This was not for climate data but what happens if I was in a situation where I need access to this sort of data? Are we going to outsource it to another country?

    I’m definitely not an expert in this field but feel that data about climate change could be highly useful to the sectors like farming/agriculture and for the development of scientific instruments to collect and monitor that data.

    So I ask the Prime Minister to take this as an example of how important the CSIRO is to Australian people and software developers of Australia.

    All walks of life are affected by climate. We need to expand our knowledge to understand climate, how it changes, how our activities impact on climate. If we are smart, we need to increase our capacity on this, not reduce it, so we can anticipate better on what may come.
