For months we’ve been asking Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to step in and stop the cuts to climate science at the CSIRO – now secret tapes have revealed that the Government's attitiude towards climate science is behind the cuts.

'It's a fundamental shift away from curiosity-led research toward impact... The federal government was CSIRO's most important 'customer', and it no longer wanted what the climate scientists were selling.

'I don't mean to be insensitive,' said Dr Marshall, 'but you have to get real about your customer.'"

    Climate mitigation is important, but we really need to understand the mechanisms underlying our changing climate. This is what the CSIRO climate teams do so well, and uniquely for Australian conditions. They are one of Australia’s most precious long term ressources!

    Without CSIRO climate researches, it is difficult for Australia to find a proper way to adjust for climate change, because there are still lots of uncertainties of regional climate change impacts.

    We, Japanese scientists, have achieved many great results with CSIRO scientists in our collaborative Southern Ocean researches. Our collaboration is indispensable for understanding climate issues.

    CSIRO scientists are playing leading roles in the world climate research. It is crucially important to keep their strength not only for Australians but also for all l on our present and future earth for sustainability.

    This action is the Massive DISASTER in the whole of the Pacific Region and our more than 10million people and islands need your technical advisors/scientists to provide advise for the next 20-30 years if climate change and variability and our livelihoods are doomed for our nations of the Pacific.


    The CSIRO and the people is a great investment for all of us in this region and please preserve and sustain this great empire. They are life for our survival!

    I am a French Oceanographer, involved in international programs for observing the world ocean, an important task in the climate change context. I want to poin out the high quality of the research at CSIRO, and the fact that some of this research (in particular on the SOuthern Ocean) is unique. Curring it would significantly hamper international efforts on climate change research.

    We need CSIRO scientists to keep us and the government informed of the statistics on factors causing climate change. How can we invoke innovation without the CSIRO. More money please Malcolm.

    The great steps forward in science and technology have mostly come from general research not from industry specifc market driven work. Nothing is more important than understanding the world we live in. Letting a silicon valley narrow approach dominate our research agenda is a big mistake . Long term research is essential if an agile intelligent thriving country is really our agenda!!!!! Don’t cut down centres of excellence don’t narrow the focus. Industry should fund their own research . Keep csiro independent let the excellent work continue please don’t dumb down the one shining light in our otherwise ordinary r and d sector !!!!!!

    We need scientists to play research n do science n research with no outcome in mind. Thats how we got wifi.

    CSIRO is an investment in our future. This organisation has done a huge amount to protect our food resources and provide advice on climate related issues. It needs political support at the highest level.

    Dear Malcolm

    We need this great Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization(CSIRO) founded in 1916 and based in Canberra as ADVISARY Council for Science and Industry.

    It solves many issues and makes a great difference to Industry, people, health in Australia and contributes to the planet in many ways. We need this organization to be supported by the Australian taxpayer for our survival in innovation, employment and conservation of our planet.
