About Proud to be Public

Launched by members of the Community & Public Sector Union (CPSU) who want to rally the community behind our awesome public services. We firmly believe that our country becomes a better place when our public services get the support they need and our hardworking public servants can do their thing. It's all about making sure our public services can thrive, grow, and innovate while creating job opportunities and career paths for everyone.

Together, we've had some incredible wins in protecting our essential public services from being snatched away by privatisation. Our community has banded together and achieved some seriously awesome stuff in recent years.

Saved Medicare from privatisation

Safeguarded Medicare from the imminent threat of privatisation under the Coalition Government's plan. We fought tooth and nail to ensure that this vital public service remains accessible and affordable for all Australians.

Championed the protection of the ASIC registry

Prevented the Government from selling it off for profit. By keeping it in public hands, we safeguarded transparency and accountability in financial markets.

Stood strong against the privatisation of our visa system

Thwarting the Coalition Government's agenda to deteriorate its efficiency and hand it over to their cronies for personal gain. We believe in maintaining a fair and efficient immigration process that upholds the rights and dignity of individuals.

Achieved a groundbreaking anti-privatisation commitment

In the ACT, establishing a powerful precedent in the fight against privatisation. We have shown that public services should remain public, firmly rooted in the hands of the community to ensure their integrity, accessibility, and effectiveness.

Protect Australia Post: Keep It in Public Hands

Thanks to the Proud to be Public community, the former Coalition Government backed down from privatising Australia Post. But our vigilance remains crucial. Join us in safeguarding Australia Post's public ownership, ensuring fair and reliable service for all Australians.

Building support for better social security systems

Led a relentless campaign alongside dedicated workers to put an end to the harmful robo debt scheme. Together, we fought for justice and fairness, ensuring that vulnerable individuals could not be burdened by unjust debt claims. Additionally, we vehemently opposed the outsourcing of Services Australia jobs, standing up for the hardworking employees who are the backbone of this essential service

Preserving our Cultural Treasures: Securing the Future of National Collecting Institutions

From the iconic National Gallery and National Library to the captivating National Portrait Gallery, we have worked tirelessly to ensure their preservation. Notably, the proud to be public community has also played a vital role in saving Trove, our invaluable digital archive. Together, let's cherish and protect our cultural heritage for generations to come.

Stood against cuts to CSIRO & ABC

Took a stand against the devastating cuts imposed on the CSIRO and ABC by the Coalition government. We mobilised the community, rallying widespread support to protect these invaluable institutions from crippling reductions. Recognising their vital contributions to scientific advancements, environmental protection, and unbiased information, we worked tirelessly to ensure that the CSIRO and ABC could continue to fulfill their crucial roles.

Stopped the privatisation of the department of veterans affairs

We campaigned to improve services for our veterans by stopping the privatisation of the Department of Veterans Affairs. We had a good win securing 447, or 27% more jobs, this is a substantial boost to existing capacity but there is more to do to turn the tide of privatisation through labour-hire.

Join us and let’s fight for a better future

Despite the tireless efforts of Services Australia workers during times of crisis, the devastating impact of thousands of job cuts has left countless individuals waiting on hold for assistance.

The current privatised employment services and mutual obligations system only punishes job seekers instead of providing the support they truly need to secure employment.

It's disheartening that public servants still lack the necessary whistleblower protections to speak out against wrongdoing.

It's alarming to witness tax-dodging multinational companies continuing to secure government contracts.

Together, we are determined to restore a frank and fearless public service that stands ready to support individuals when they need it the most.

Join Proud to be Public today and be part of the movement for a stronger, more compassionate public service.
